About

Lhodak Sey is situated in Lhoka, located 1400 feet above sea level in Tibet. Since Lhodak sits to the south (lho) of Yarlha Shambu and that the famous nine storied shrine built by the world renowned Yogi Jetsun Mela Repa for his master Marpa’s son (sey) Dama Tongden is also located here, hence the name, Lhodak Sey is given to the place. After China’s occupation of Tibet in 1959, many natives left their historic village and escaped into the neighboring country, Bhutan where they established Sey monastery in Wangdu Choeling, Bumthang. As of now, Seypa people are scattered all over the world with the largest clusters living in Dehradun, India where they established Lhodak Seykhar Culture and Welfare Society in 1986 and the group has been hosting annual opera festival, Seykardo since then. Dehradun-based Lhodak Seykhar Culture and Welfare Society serves as the epicenter and official hub of Seypa people around the world
