About us:

Sey holds a special place in the hearts of many, as it is the birthplace of the revered Jetsun Marpa Lotsawa, born at Tashi Denya in Lhodrak, Tibet. It is here that the foundations of our lineage, rooted in the teachings of the great spiritual guru Marpa Lotsawa, were laid.

One significant landmark in Sey’s history is Seykhar Guthok, built by Milarepa as a means to transform his negative karma into positive virtues, under the guidance of Marpa Lotsawa. This act symbolizes the transformative power of spiritual practice and serves as a testament to our connection to the lineage of Marpa.

In 1959, during the tumultuous times in Tibet, many Tibetans sought refuge in neighboring countries as China occupied Tibet. Our forebears, recognizing the importance of preserving our spiritual heritage, brought holy relics and monuments with them as they migrated to Bhutan. It was through their dedication and hard work that Sey Dratsang was established in Bhutan, serving as a sanctuary for the continuation of our traditions.

Despite political upheavals, a significant number of our community eventually resettled in India. In Dehradun, within the Dekyiling settlement, cultural preservation organizations were established in 1986. These voluntary community organizations aim to unite members of the Sey community through promoting and preserving elements like the Sey Kartook Festival, various ancient Cham (religious mask dances), cultural dances, and welfare services.

Now, with over 1,000 members worldwide, we are dedicated to preserving the rich culture and traditions of Marpa and Milarepa’s lineage, a legacy that stretches back thousands of years.
